I consolidated the top tags associated with my music taste per week into the following ten genres:

How is popularity calculated?

Each week, I took my top five artists and for each artist, I grabbed the top five tags (or genres) associated with them and calculated its own popularity factor using the equation
popularity factor = tag count * play count, where "tag count" refers to the relative amount of times users on Last.fm have attached this tag to the artist and "play count" refers to the amount of times I played tracks by the artist that week.

Adding up the popularity factors for each tag gives me the tag's week-long popularity.

Timeline

Some dates that I felt help put the visualization in perspective:

• August 3, 2007: metal consistently tops the charts for one year
• August 25, 2007: I start attending USC
• February 15, 2009: reggae consistently beats metal in popularity
• July 20, 2009: I declare Russian as a minor at USC, apply to study abroad
• August 2, 2009: First time Russian music tops my charts
• November 8, 2009: dubstep enters my charts (categorized under electronic in visualization)
• January 25, 2010: I move to St. Petersburg, Russia for a semester of study
• February 7, 2010: folk/world (specifically kavkaz and armenian) consistently top my charts
• May 27, 2010: I return home to Los Angeles
• July 25, 2010: First time dubstep tops my charts
• August 8, 2010: electronic consistently tops my charts for the rest of 2010
